Results of Orthognathics at AOS
Orthognathic (jaw) surgery corrects asymmetry of the jaw bones and realigns the jaws and teeth to improve their function. Making these corrections can provide many benefits such as:
Improve bite function
Orthognathic surgery realigns the jaws to give the teeth optimal bite function. When biting, chewing, and swallowing are easier, patients can enjoy foods they couldn’t previously consume.
Correct problems with speech
Pronunciation and speaking properly can become an embarrassing challenge with misaligned jaws. Corrective jaw surgery frees patients from their former impediments allowing them to talk clearly and easily.
Relieve pain
Misaligned jaws place added stress on the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Once jaw surgery is completed, joint pain can disappear. This is often a compelling reason patients choose to have jaw surgery.
Repair facial injury or birth defects
Growth-related maxillofacial deformities resulting from birth defects, disease, or trauma can be corrected with reconstructive maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Alfi’s intraoral surgical approach corrects issues without leaving any visible scars.
Provide relief for obstructive sleep apnea
Misaligned jaws can affect the anatomy of the upper airway and lead to obstruction. Orthognathic surgery can open the airway and provide life-changing results.
Correct facial imbalance
Small chins, underbites, overbites, and crossbites can cause facial asymmetry and affect the appearance. Orthognathic surgery can correct these issues and improve facial aesthetics.
Jaw Defects & Reconstruction
Patients may develop jaw defects for a variety of reasons. Injuries due to facial trauma or infection can cause damage to the jaw bone. Defects can also result from an impaired development process preventing certain regions from fully forming. Oral pathologies such as cysts, tumors, or head and neck cancers can also lead to jaw deformities.
When severe skeletal defects can not be resolved with orthodontics Dr. Alfi performs reconstruction of the maxillary (upper jaw) and/or mandibular (lower jaw) to restore facial aesthetics and improve jaw function. Surgical interventions like this often result in lengthy recovery times and visible scars. Bone grafts are also often a part of facial reconstruction care. Dr. Alfi has pioneered an intraoral surgical approach where all incisions are made within the mouth, eliminating visible scars and leading to faster recovery times. With this revolutionary approach and the application of ViviGen® grafting materials, we can rebuild bone without the need for additional procedures.
At Alfi Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery, we use the latest cutting edge technology and 3D imaging to determine the extent of the defect. Our virtual surgical planning allows us to determine the precise type of reconstruction needed and provides detailed guides to execute your procedure with the utmost precision. Jaw Fracture
TMJ fractures occur when there is direct trauma to the face. Most often, the jaw breaks along the condyles, the rounded projections on either side of the jaw bone. Dislocation of the joints may also cause fractures. Car accidents, sports injuries, falls, and assaults are the most common causes of TMJ fractures.
Dr. Alfi is an expert in the care of facial trauma and reconstruction surgery. Patients can find comfort in their surgical capabilities to get them through the entire care process. The first step in the treatment process will be a thorough exam of your face to check for bruising, swelling, or protrusions on either side of your face. At this time we will also evaluate your pain level. It is important that you pay attention to the discomfort in your jaw as you chew and note any increases to your pain level. The doctors may also take X-rays to determine if you have a fracture and the extent of the break. Depending on the severity, treatment for a jaw fracture may require surgery. Clean breaks can sometimes heal on their own when the jaw is immobilized.
Jaw Surgery Procedure & Recovery
Orthognathic surgery is a team effort between an oral surgeon and an orthodontist. At Alfi Oral, Dental Implant & Facial Surgery, we utilize the latest 3D technology and virtual surgical planning to revolutionize orthognathic surgery. Working with your orthodontist, we will create detailed surgical plans and guides that cut down on time needed for surgery and recovery. Each patient and every procedure is given this detailed attention for precise surgical execution.
Dr. Alfi’s intraoral surgical approach eliminates visible scars by making every incision inside the mouth. During the procedure, your oral surgeon will surgically align the jaws following the detailed guides created during the virtual planning and secure the plates with screws. This procedure is typically performed in a hospital or surgical center using general anesthesia. Post-surgical recovery requires several days in the hospital to monitor your condition. Upon discharge you will be provided with detailed instructions that outline what to eat, how to maintain proper oral hygiene, and what to do to have a smooth and comfortable recovery.
Dr. Alfi’s commitment to research and education has kept him at the forefront of innovation and a true leader in the intraoral technique. He continues to share his knowledge and skill set with fellow surgeons in his field.
