Osteomyelitis

Long-term Care for Osteomyelitis

Osteomyelitis is caused by a bacterial infection that creates inflammation or swelling in the bone tissue of the jaw. The inflammation reduces blood supply and if left untreated can cause the bone to deteriorate. Long-term care for osteomyelitis is required to prevent future complications such as fractures of the affected bone, stunted growth in children, and gangrene infection.

Diagnosis of Osteomyelitis Bone Infections

Diagnosis of osteomyelitis can be difficult but is absolutely necessary to control the infection and prevent damage to the jaw bone. Your specialist will take 3D scans of your mouth and jaw to get detailed images that will confirm the presence of an infection and determine the correct course of treatment. In some cases that are more difficult to diagnose a biopsy is required. If necessary this procedure is performed in an operating room under the comfort of general anesthesia. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons receive additional training and certification to safely administer all forms of anesthesia to patients of all ages.

Once accurately diagnosed for osteomyelitis your oral surgeon will create an individualized treatment plan to cure the infection and minimize any long-term complications. Treatment for Osteomyelitis

Treatment options for osteomyelitis generally include antibiotics and in more severe cases surgery to drain the infection or remove damaged tissue and bone. The goal is to cure the infection and prevent any long-term complications. If surgery is necessary, Dr. David Alfi will remove the affected bone and place a bone graft to stimulate new, healthy bone to grow in its place.

Types of Anesthesia

There are a variety of anesthesia and sedation options available at our practice.
